Chiropractic Care for Hand and Wrist Pain
Surprisingly, many hand and wrist problems start in the neck
The human hand and wrist are incredibly complex, with 35 bones between the two and a complex maze of nerves and tendons helping them function correctly. We use our hands and wrists to do practically everything and, when they are in pain, it can significantly impede our everyday lives. Carpal tunnel is one of the most common problems but many others can cause wrist and hand pain, including ganglion cysts, arthritis and more.
Interestingly, many hand and wrist problems begin in the cervical bones of the neck, which are the first 7 vertebrae of the spine. Neck problems like poor posture or whiplash can cause subluxations of the cervical vertebrae and put pressure on the cervical spinal nerves. These nerves exit the neck, travel down the arm and, you guessed it, end at the wrists and hands. If they are ‘pinched’ at the neck, they can cause wrist pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar tunnel syndrome of the elbow. Tingling and numbness of the hand and fingers plus poor grip strength can result as well, and all because your neck is subluxated!
Of course, a person whose job requires that they perform repetitive movements all day with their hands can also damage their wrist and hands joints, and boy oh boy are there a lot of joints when you have 35 bones! Writers, secretaries, dentists and hairstylists know these problems intimately, as well as factory and construction workers. They use their hands and wrists all day, every day, and the constant motion can push the delicate joints out of place, especially in the wrist where the 8 wrist bones, called carpal bones, lie.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, for example, is when several of the wrist bones are subluxated and put pressure on the median nerve, one of the 3 major nerves that go through the wrist to give your hand the incredible ability it has to hold, grip, twist, pinch and so much more.
The good news is that chiropractic care can offer significant relief from all of these problems. Chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine can do wonders for wrist and hand problems like wrist clicking and locking, numbness and tingling and acute pain, as well as help to relieve De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, a painful wrist problem that affects the intricate web of wrist tendons.
Chiropractic adjustments to the wrist and hand can be very helpful as well. Yes, chiropractors do that! They are joint specialists and can help with joint problems almost anywhere in the body, although they do tend to concentrate on the vertebral joints of the spine because that’s where many problems begin.
So if hand and wrist problems are making your regular life, and your work life, difficult and painful, rest assured that chiropractic offers a proven solution that’s natural and effective!
